Estimation of 305 Days Milk Yield Using Partial Milk Yield in Holstein Cattle

In this study, possibilities of predicting 305-day milk yield from various partial milk yields of Holstein cattle raised at Ceylanpınar State Farm and using from partial milk yields of complete lactation milk records of daughters in sire evaluation were investigated. Positive and significant correlation coefficients between cumulative monthly partial milk yields and 305-day yieid were obtained. Also, heritability of partial and 305 days milk yield were estimated as 0.054 to 0.130. Positive and highly significant correlation coefficients between breeding values of sires that were calculated using cumulative monthly partial milk yields and breeding values of sires that were calculated using 305-day milk yield, were obtained. At the end of the research it was concluded that, the correlation coefficient between 152 days milk yield and 305 days milk yield is high at enough degree to use in selection for milk yield.

Examining Agricultural Reform Applications in Turkey from the View Point of the Need for Spatial Data and Information: Case Study of Trabzon

In Turkey, to adapt EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the Agricultural Reform Implementation Project (ARIP) has been carried out. However, due to inadequate spatial data infrastructure, the effectiveness of the projects within the ARIP has been considerably weak. In this study, some investigations were held within the Directorate of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) in Trabzon Province. In the light of the investigations and legislative-technical works on the application of the CAP in EU as well, basic necessities were determined. In the application stage of this study, in pilot areas, it was studied on the production of map bases standing for agricultural land cover/use data from aerial photos or high resolution satellite imagery in accordance with the standards by Joint Reearch Center (JRC). These bases were used for the assessment of the National Record of Farmers (NRF) in pilot areas. As a result, it was determined that only 30% of agricultural land in the pilot areas had been able to be recorded within the NRF. For the future of agricultural reforms and being able to adapt changing agricultural policies, it was determined that, beyond tracing the current policies, in collaboration with such initiatives as TAKBİS and the National Information Centre (NIC), it is needed a more powerful structuring in view of technical and administrative arrangements.

Importance and Necessity of Landscape Rehabilitation of Tuzluçayır-Mamak Open Dump (Landfill) Area

Generally, domestic solid waste has been collected and disposed without any treatment in arbitrarily selected areas in Turkey. Municipalities have performed this process. Open landfills are generally located in the periphery of the city in view that economy of accessibility. The open dumping implementations, which are considered as the most primitive and environmentally damaging method of solid waste management, however, should be given up as soon as achievable, for mitigating the negative effects of open dumping implementations to the environment. This paper takes into account the strategic information about the landscape rehabilitation of Tuzluçayır-Mamak (Ankara, Turkey) open domestic waste dump area (landfill).

Analysis of Correlation of Wheat Production and Prices with Koyck Models in Turkey

At this research, it was aimed to determine the correlations between wheat production and its price in Turkey. All producers make a decision while looking at previous year price level. So, this attitude causes a fluctuation of price and production level. Wheat production was effected delayed value of average price. Koyck model was used at the calculation of delayed value. At this model, wheat production (dependent) and wheat prices (independent) took a consider as variables between 1973 and 2003. Variables were converted into logarithmic scheme to stabilize them. According to the model results, wheat production was effected towards back from maximum 3 years prices. In additions, it was calculated that it needed 0.8325 year (10 months) that wheat production was affacted important level at wheat prices changes.

Comparison of Some Biological Characterizations of the Entomopathogenic Nematodes, Steinernema weiseri and S. feltiae (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae), Isolated in Turkey

The entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema weiseri, was firstly isolated in Beytepe Campus of Hacettepe University, in Ankara, Turkey and S. feltiae (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae), which was found in Ankara University Campus. In the present study, reproduction capacities and effectiveness of the both entomopathogenic nematodes were compared in variable conditions. The reproduction capacities were examined at the following temperatures; 10, 15 and 20 ºC and the doses of 10, 50 and 100 infective juveniles-dauer juveniles (DJs) in the last instar larvae of greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella L. (Lep: Pyralidae). New generation DJs of each species, which produce within the host larvae and emerging from cadaver were counted and the results showed that S. weiseri was more productive than S. feltiae in all experimental conditions. Effectiveness of the both species on the last instar G. mellonella larvae as LD50 was calculated 48 h after penetration. According to the results, S. weiseri is more effective than S. feltiae. The present results indicated that S. weiseri can be more useful for biological control.

Relationship Between Spermatozoa Motility, Egg Size, Fecundity and Fertilization Success in Salmo trutta abanticus

Sperm and eggs were collected without anesthesia by abdominal massage from Salmo trutta abanticus. The relationship between spermatozoa motility, egg size, fecundity and fertilization rates were investigated. Fertilization rates ranged from 72% to 80% and correlated positively with spermatozoa motility (r= 0.111, p>0.01) and egg size (r=0.459, p>0.01). On the other hand, negative correlation (r=-0.535, p>0.01) was evaluated between fertiliation rates and fecundity. Consequently it was determined that increase in spermatozoa motility and egg sizes effect the fertilization success positively in Salmo trutta abanticus.

Progressing of Soils Formed on Different Aspect, Geologic and Physiographic Unites

The aim of this study is to investigate physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of soils formed on different geologic (Emir, Gölbaşı, Virancık gölselleri and Laleli formations) and physiographic units (low and high terraces, DII, DII, and DIV plateaus). The study area is approximately 25 km far from south of Ankara- Gölbaşı and its near vicinity. For this aim, 5 profiles located on different geologic and physiographic units were investigated and soil samples taken from each horizons. Physical, chemical and XRD, determined distribution of mineralogical compositions analysis were done for each soil sample. According to analysis results, it was found that there are significantly differences among the profiles. Dominant clay mineral of PI and PIII profiles formed on DII plateau and on low terrace and classified as Entisol is low illite and they have also quartz, calsit, chlorite minerals. In addition, whereas PII and PV profiles formed on DIII and DIV plateaus were classified as Inceptisol, It were found significantly differences between them in terms of soil formation factors. The last profile (PIV) formed on high terrace and classified as Mollisol has more advance soil formation process than the other profiles. It was determined illite, smectite, palygorskit and calsit, quartz, chlorite, feldespat minerals in PIV profile. In addition that, Soils formed on south part of study area have developed more than on north parts and rubefaction and calcification important soil formation processes were determined in profile PIV and PV.

Determination of Fungal Root Rot Disease Agents Associated with Onion Fields in Amasya Province

In this study, fungal root-rot agents associated with onion (Allium cepae L.) fields in Amasya province and their incidence and severity were investigated. For this purpose, totally 110 onion fields were examined in 2000 and 2001. Finally, Fungal root-rot was determined to be common and severe disease. In the first year of the study, 95,7% and in 2001 100% of the onion fields in Amasya province were found to be infested with root-rot disease and it was determined that the incidence of the disease was 49,1 % and 70,7 % in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Disease severity was 34,3 % in 2000, while it was 42,4 % in 2001. Isolations made from the plants infested with root-rot disease yielded 91,6% Fusarium spp., 4,2% Rhizoctonia spp., 1,9% Sclerotium cepivorum, 1,5% Pythium oligandrum and 0,8% Trichoderma harzianum. As a result of the pathogenicity test, it was found that the virulence of F. oxysporum and R. solani AG-4 were high, while that of P. oligandrum was very low. S. cepivorum was found to be moderately virulent.

Determining the Appropriateness of Controlling Organs Settlement Characteristics of Tractors to TSE Standard

In this study, controlling organs settlement sizes of tractors, that are the most important tool in agricultural production, are compared with TSE standard. The most common tractor models used in the agriculture of Turkey are chosen as the material. The values stated in TSE 3478 for the seat and controlling organs for 10 different tractors widely used in Ankara rural area are determined by measuring. Comparision are carried out in terms sizes that are standad tractors with TSE and the sizes appropriate for standards are stated, and comparison results are calculated for each tractor as appropriate size percent. At the result of the research, it has been determined that 70 % of the tractors chosen as the material are 60%-80% appropriate for TSE standard.

Robotic Milking System in Dairy Farms

In this research, robotic milking that was common used in dairy farms with the inclusion of mainly Europe was given information. Process of transition of system through dairy farms was mentioned as from automatic milking. Furthermore, work principles and equipments of robotic milking system, consequence in economy and labour, milk production, milk quality and animal health of robotic milking were emphasized.
